Everyone on Amazon hates Civilization 5 because of Steam

rageJust see this page on Amazon. That’s actually pretty horrifying. For people like me and most of you here (should I say Steam veterans?) the flaws of Steam app and the whole system are very well known and we pretty much ignore them at this point.

But stuff that ‘regular’ people have to go through when activating, decrypting games, verify cache (if the game fucks up), Steam “offline” mode, get along with Steam community and many other things like coping with horrible Steam user interface really threatens the future of Steam as major DRM for new games.

Maybe it’s good, maybe it’s bad, time will show.

Yeah, but unfortunatly many companies start to bind your game keys to an account to be able to play. EA is thinking about it and Ubisoft is doing it for every new release (e.g. RUSE again, you have to bind it to your Steam- AND to an Ubi-Account o.O). It’s a special deal with Civ5, because it’s not using Steam for DRM only but for thier SteamWorks to manage the whole Multiplayer-Stuff.

Steam is not bad itself as long as it is a CHOICE. What i mean is, that if I buy a game on steam rather than via retail because it’s cheaper, i know that i have some limitations (requires internet connection, limited lifetime, no resale etc.) and I accept that and all is well (i have over 100 games on Steam, so i’m far from being a “hater”). But if I buy a retail game at retail prices I expect to have the usual “rights” to play it forever or resell it when i don’t want it anymore.

So this is a huge setback for Sid (even before considering the vastly inferior graphics and features of the game itself). He should have really known better. He was the person I most respected in the whole industry, and now… well… since the moment he signed this garbage he isn’t anymore.

So the cd-key-store-owners are going to spam in the comments or what?

I’m not in love with Steam, but most of the comments are just plain wrong.
If you buy a disc-based Steam game you can install it like any other and don’t have to download anything (just did it with RUSE 1 week ago). Region locks are not effected if you buy a game in your local store and it’s even not restricted by Steam but by the publisher itself (example is Activision who region-blocked the activation of new european import versions of MW2 months after the release in Germany).

Steam is not the ultimate solution but the best solution we have at the moment in my opinion. I love it’s possibilities but hate it’s restrictions (which aren’t many at the moment furtunately).

why is everyone so fkn in love with steam? it sucks ass and makes you buy retail because its so expensive to buy elsewhere, look at the name of this site lol

Steam is ridiculous and the region restrictions are a plague to all gamers

Some comments are soo hilarious “I want to play, but cannot. Steam has ruined it. I WILL NOT install that program on my system, sorry.”

I can’t play because I don’t want to install steam duuuur xD

Looks like the start of steam with cs 1.6.

Fair enough, looks like everyone there don’t like steam(or most of them), but still don’t blame steam for that it won’t play on your computer or it crashes, the steam app doesn’t have anything to say with the game itself.

What a mindless bunch of morons, 99% of their complaints are just them being too stupid to learn how to use a simple program.

Like H4ndy said, if you read through the reviews you find out that people blame steam for the game crashing and crap like that. Civ 5 needs a couple of patches, and if they selected steam to be their DRM, then fine, it’s a LOT less intrusive than other DRMs out there.

Sorry, but 98% of all 1-star-reviews are just bullshit (like Steam crashes my router or is the cause for bad game performance or you have to be allways online to play), the remaining 2% are ppl who hat problems with Steam in the past. I guess they never tried a game with UbiLauncher.

    Poor lads.

Well, I love steam, and I’m sure they’ll learn to love it too.
