Switzerland Bans Violent Games

flag-Switzerland.svg

The Swiss National Council has officially enforced a law that will lead to banning of any violent video game. The ruling has not been revealed yet, but it will be confirmed once the Swiss government reveals the requirements. However, the most likeliest series of things to come will be a ban on the distribution, production, and sale of any games that are rated PEGI 16+ and PEGI 18+.

    @Steam Question
    According to many players on the forum, games you already bought won’t be removed or changed in such cases.

    Afaik, there is no video game studio thats mainly located in Switzerland.

    There are banned movies in Switzerland. A few dozen movies, nearly all are horror movies. It’s a strange law and there is no up-to-date list.
    Many stores actually don’t know about it. So you might find something in a regular store you are not allowed to own. “Braindead” and “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre” are popular examples of forbidden movies. Saw is not on the list however.

    Counterstrike is banned in Brazil and still everyone play it over Steam.
    In the end such a regulation just means Swiss gamers are going to save their money and “get” the game for free.

    Thats bad, really bad.

    So what will happen to people owning a specific game on Steam? They flip the switch and *bam* you don’t have a game anymore on your account or it is censored?

    That might be one more reason not to buy games on Steam if this is true.
