Steam chat now supports history after nearly 10 years

Everyone who’s using the Steam mobile app for Android already knows that Steam was capable of keeping the chat history on the device (or servers actually). People also wondered why the fuck isn’t this built-in in the desktop Steam client. Well since yesterday it is! You can now close those annoying chat windows you have and re-open them later just to read the message someone sent 5 seconds ago. You can also use the chat itself on Steam Community website at http://steamcommunity.com/chat/ which makes it even cooler.

Additionally Steam updater itself is now using a native Windows GUI (well.. on Windows! No idea if it has changed on Linux/Mac) and unread chat messages are now shown in the upper right corner:

    2 weeks.. I can’t even see the full chatlog I had with my friend from 30 minutes ago!! This whole thing is a lie.. if it were 2 weeks I’d be happy

    Still waiting on valve to implement a true fix to this. Really would be great, especially if you get scammed and are trying to report it to SteamRep

    you can see your past massages on your mobile devices if you are using the steam app which most of u do i think

    3 years later – Still waiting on the day REAL chat history is integrated instead of this “tiny bit of last convo” chat history. C’mon Steam you can do itttt! :D Even if it just saves the text locally, I wouldn’t care. That’s still better than not being able to read ANYTHING beyond the last few things said. I’ve had some really fun conversations with friends and have made great memories on Steam. I’d love to be able to keep them! ^-^

    It’s a damn shame though that now you can’t use custom sounds like before. Seriously every time I try to, Steam just extracts from it’s package and replaces them with the original sounds.

    You need to have the Steam Beta Client enabled for the Steam client to save the history.

      To see it, yes. For it to remember your messages, no.

      It just doesn’t display the history in the chat window. Although it all works on the community page without beta too.
