Valve’s Source engine have been around for nearly a decade now, making its debut in 2004. Even though it has been updated countless times it is now starting to look somewhat old.
Back in September Valve edited their website, adding “And it’s about to get even better” to the Source-section. With the recent release of Source Filmmaker Valve added more fuel to the fire; it has been discovered several images and more than 60 snippets of code referencing the Source 2 engine, with this being one of them:
”’Return an str with the current engine version.
If key doesn’t doesn’t exist, assume ‘Source’, otherwise invalid — assume next-gen ‘Source 2′.”’
Valve claims that the Source engine is “the most flexible, comprehensive, and powerful game development environment out there”, so a new engine would definitely be awesome.
Assuming these rumors are correct, I wonder what game(s) will be the first to feature this new engine..
