Kalypso backstabbing EU users with unfair price for Dungeons!! (updated)

Thank you everyone, who joined Kalypso forum and said something about this unfair price.

We won something, but not much. The price has been lowered 5€, down to 44,99€. BUT this doesn’t fix the problem. We get now ripped off by 52% instead of 67%.

Beware. There are more Kalypso games with ultra unfair price as written in my post also. I think that they will simply delete the it and ban me from the forums.

But hey, wait a minute. Wtf is wrong with the price, 49.99€ ($66.55)?? and in US only $39.99 (30.00€)? That’s 67% more expensive!

And not only in Steam!

Impulse:

Dungeons is available for pre-order worldwide for $39.99 USD | 44.99 EUR | 34.95 GBP. Dungeon pre-orders will be charged immediately with instant access to Ceville. There are NO REFUNDS on this title. Dungeons will be released worldwide on Impulse February 10, 2011.

GamersGate:

Price: 44.95€ – http://www.gamersgate.com/DD-DUNGEONS/dungeons

I wanted this game! Now I don’t! Unless they correct the price politics. But they won’t.

Fortunately there is a thread in Kalypso forums about this Steam Special Edition and one guy asked the question, why is the price in EU 20€ more expensive than in US. Let’s find out what they answer to this. And we got an answer:

They don’t give shit about EU! Ok that is not entirely true, because they finally lowered the price by 5€, but unfortunately it is still far from being fair price :(

Okay, I registered and posted something too, let’s wait answer for this.

So DO NOT BUY THIS GAME (DUNGEONS)! Unless it’s on sale with a very cheap price!

Neat, they prefer to earn 0 EUR over earning 40 EUR.
I bet their employees are thrilled to know that.

    Kalypso… seriously…

You can’t enforce these prices, you know that…

You’re not Activision sellings its latest CoD, you’re a tiny publisher, admit it.

Don’t try that, you’re not in the 2000′ where you could have fun with the retail prices, you’re in 2011 : digital platforms are bigger than retail (=> regional market are no longer relevant), and there’s torrents if you try to mess up with gamers too much.

Live in the now, live in 2011.

    Fair price ffs.

50% more in EU?? Ha. This one i will play for free, thank you very much. But ok, if the game is awesome and they incorporate multiplayer i will buy it – once it is 50% lower price in EU compared to US.

Now fuck you Kalypso and every other company that uses this scheme and go fight for your customers in EU. Otherwise torrent wins and we will all just laugh and laugh…

@Anonymous user. I assume that you are connected to Kalypso company based on your comments and location. So I’m glad that you are here and can be part of this topic.

We have no grudge against the company or employees. And we love the games.

We all wish to live in harmony, get nice paycheck and afford our basic needs and entertainment needs. But if prices will go high for no reason, we have to look over our expenses. We cannot cut our outgoings for basic needs so we have to limit our entertainment expenses. And if we realize that one entertainment item is being sold somewhere else with so much better price, then it is first thing to go.

So if you go to a supermarket in Worms and see that Duke Nukem Forever costs 49,95€ but in Bensheim local store it costs 39,95€. I wonder which shop will you choose? And when you go back to Bensheim to buy the thing, the game is sold-out or the store doesn’t even exist anymore. So you will think over, do you really need it or not. And for easing your pain, you tell yourself, that you will buy it, when it comes on sale with discount. And then you will wait until the price drops.

What I want to say, is that almost every game that comes out, costs now ca 50€. And soon 60€. And this, my friend, means that soon there will be lots of games on the market, very good and very pretty games, but not enought buyers. And this leads to the collapse of game industry as there are not enough people who can afford buying the games. And this means that several good developers or publishers have to close their business. Just look what happened during industrial crisis.

But I still wonder, why most companies push away european customers with such unfair prices. There is no money tree in our backyards. We have limited resources too.

Let’s compare Command and Conquer 4. In US the price is $19.99, it is ca 15€. But it is being sold in Steam for 49,99€. And in Australia even for $69.99. So, how would you feel, if you know that you have to pay more than 3 times more than somewhere else? And this is not one unique case, but it is usually so.

But fortunately everything is not so dark and pessimistic. There are still companies that have fair priced games on the market.
Fair prices in Steam – http://www.steamprices.com/eu/fairpriced
And some have even cheaper price for EU customers than for US customers – http://www.steamprices.com/eu/topsavings

Yes, we want the games, we want new games and we want to buy them. For reasonable price. We want fair prices to stay legal and support the gaming industry.

@Anonymous: I understand that you don’t like the idea of boycott, but seriously, I can tell that you are a clueless person.
Please go somewhere else or at least get information and think before you post.

@slay: you’re doing a great job, here and on the Kalypso forum.

@Johnny – yeah, go ahead, when you want your accounts get banned :) This is not allowed by Steam rules.

Why not just create a user on the US Steam Store, and gift the game to your EU account?

That way you get the game for the proper price and tell them to shove it.

OK, so the EUR price for Dungeons on Steam is too high. Why not get it from somewhere else then if you’re feeling robbed or wait for the inevitable price drop?

Having seen the game in previews and video, it is well worth the 45 EUR price tag. It’s a perfectly common price for games like these in Germany, for example. The PC market in the US is crumbling, you can’t sell PC exclusive niche titles like Dungeons for the same price. That’d be economical suicide.

I’d rather see companies continue putting out stuff like Dungeons than call for a boycott just because you thing it’s too expensive.

Seriously, shame on you for this slander campaign. If they will never put out an expansion (they promised multiplayer addition if the game is successfull) thanks to your boycott players around the world will put the blame on this site. And rightly so.

I am sorry, but regional overpricing is not excused by opening new office in US.

We are not saying that Dungeons is a crappy game or the developers aren’t competent. Vice versa, we were very eager to get this game. If the price wasn’t so unfair.

Do you have considered why cheap markets survive, even if they get almost nothing from sales? Because they sell with cheap price and they sell lots.
So if products price is high, then only rich people will buy it, because most can’t afford it, but, if you sell with lower price, more people will buy it, so you can get more cut from more products sold. Everybody wins.
    But not in current scenario.

Everyone is a customer. Customer doesn’t like to be screwed. Customer holds the money. Customer has rights to choose, what and when to buy. And if customer feels that he is being robbed, he can choose not to buy and warn other people as well. Also customer can choose some alternatives that we do not recommend.

This certainly is the ugly side of Steamunpowered.com – Kalypso is a small publisher, they just opened offices in the US, so logically they need to sell their games cheaper there to be able to survive. Dungeons is made by a bunch of very creative people and everyone is super active and friendly on their forums. They also use a very user-friendly DRM which rewards registered players with free content for their games that they develop at their own cost. Also, Kalypso has published such great games as Tropico 3 and Patrician 4, it is such a dick move to call for a boycott on their games. Steamunpowered and everyone calling for a boycott here should be ashamed of themselves.

Look-like they are confused with €/$ devise :
    For them it’s more like 1$ = 1,3€ than 1€ = 1,3$

Let’s try with devise exchange :
    Partician 4
    US : 29,99€
    EU : 39,99$ (29,76€ Wow that’s fair ! )
