Gabe Newell in Australia

Sorry I’m posting this so late but I didn’t have much time. Here’s the presentation from Australia – with Joe (the creator of Fly Gabe Newell campaign) and Gabe Newell. Unfortunately Joe did not ask a question from our group (at least not on the video) which simply was “why do Europeans have to pay twice on Steam?” but I don’t blame him… I mean he met Gabe Newell, good job :)

Watch the video right here:

And here’s the original article from byteside.com

Joe W-A was miffed when the L4D campaign mod he’d been working on wasn’t deemed awesome enough to warrant him being flown to Valve HQ to preview L4D2. Other modders were, mostly to get them onside as peer-leaders to counter the odd anti-L4D2 community uprising happening at the time.

Anyway, Joe managed to get Gabe Newell to agree to fly to Brisbane, Australia to check out the mod-in-progress — provided Joe paid the airfare. “I was just joking”, said Gabe today. With pure internet inventiveness, Joe got the community rallied and raised the fare in a couple of days.

Today in Sydney, the great meeting took place, and we were privileged to witness it.

Gabe spoke the value of a community before introducing Joe. Said Gabe, of Joe: “Joe understands more about the dynamic of the internet than 95% of the vice presidents.”

Joe then bravely spoke a bit about how it all came about and fielded a few questions. We are thrilled to report that Joe’s a top bloke. He launched this campaign not to draw attention to himself but to simply get Gabe in front of his mod. That’s all. The explosion of interest in his story has him overwhelmed, but not to the point where he lost focus of his mission.

Joe’s about to start a Game Design course at Melbourne RMIT, and we’d bet the farm that he’ll be snapped up quick smart by a smart dev. Probably Valve, for the fairytale to come full circle.

Would Joe do it again? “I’d like to get Peter Molyneaux down here. I’ve got a few things to say to him.”

Hats off, Joe. You’re a champ and an inspiration mate. Well done.

We now present the historic moment Gabe Newell and Joe W-A meet face to face!

thx for the information Dragoon ;)

Well, I think this “Trip to the land down under” is important, if the CEO of Steam (biggest digit platform for games) still have that kind of relationship with gamers, it’s a good news, many CEO forgot what games, gamers and community are. Just look at Activision CEO Robert Kotick, imagine if that guy was in charge of Steam, it would be way worse.

btw, thinking that spending your cash in charity is always better just because it sounds “good” is really wrong.

Charity means the receiver did not worked for it and only received it because of what he is (poor, disabled, etc) and not what he do, it’s really difficult to live in a world where your work has no value for the people around you, you’re always that “poor little x” that need money or help.

Charity is always the last, your own needs and friends go first, then the charity get the cents.

Charity means the donations fully depends on your will, if you decide to buy a giant plasma TV, the donations will wait. If an economic crisis hit your country, donations will wait… (see donations for Africa right now)

In my opinion, the charity is like a wheelchair, it’s useful when you broke your legs, but if you stay on it and don’t do rehabilitation, you’ll never get up again.
And I don’t think poverty or any charity activities should be considered as “permanently disabled who need a wheelchair”.

Btw, I buy many stuff at Emmaus and give 1000€ per year for the Resto du Coeur, but I hate that, it would be much better if the whole society was paying for that, the states should be doing these activities.

Think about it, it feels good to give few dollar to a hobo, but paying your taxes for reintegration, giving the beggind hand a job instead of your spare coins is much better, for you (mentally + less drunken hoboes in the street), the begger (get a job, can make his life) and the state (less hoboes in its streets, taxes and productivity from the new job).

Don’t worry about the money. Newell paid for the flight himself and all the 3,121.27$ USD was donated to Child’s Play.

But true the video is boring.

The video is boring, apart from Gabe Newell’s speech, the rest is bland and empty. That Joe dude has absolutely nothing to say apart from “yeah” and it obviously too impressed by his own achievement to say anything of value.
Plus we didn’t even see his mod in action.
    Bleah.
    Boo.
I still find the idea of flying those two very original and I salute the fact they agreed on doing it.

On the other hand it feels weird that people give so much money in such a short time span in order to fly two game makers to see another gamer in Australia, for what result? A speech, a few photos, some beers and that’s it.
Yet so few give money to charity causes. That’s sad.
Yeah I know, I’m thinking the wrong way. Sorry. :p
