Digital money draining machine Steam Wallet is now live

steamwallet

The Steam Wallet has officially been released along with the Team Fortress 2 Mann Co. Store, where players can now purchase items right within TF2.

With Steam Wallet, you can add value to your Steam account using any of the payment methods supported by Steam. Funds in your Steam Wallet may then be used to buy any item available in the Steam store on an in-game store. You can load up your Steam Wallet ahead of time, or wait until checkout. Also, different payment methods can be combined to make a single purchase.
Once you’ve added funds to your wallet, that money will be used by default for subsequent Steam store purchases. But if you’d prefer to reserve your wallet balance for in-game purchases of Mad Milk, Holy Mackerel and Bushwackas, no problem — simply select another payment method during checkout. Your wallet funds will be there the next time you’re ready to shop at Mann Co., or any other in-game store.
TF2’s Mann Co. Store is the first of many upcoming Steamworks in-game stores where Steam Wallet funds can be spent. See the TF2 Mannconomy FAQ for any questions specific to that game. Otherwise, feel free to give the wallet a try for your next Steam purchase, and please let us know what you think.

You can add funds by clicking here: http://store.steampowered.com/steamaccount/addfunds/

“Steam subscribers can add funds in predetermined increments”

UK: £4, £8, £18, £35, £70
US: $5, $10, $25, $50, $100
EU: €5, €10, €25, €50, €100

You’ll also need to check out the new subscriber agreement, which states, among other things, that funds added to your wallet are non-refundable and non-transferrable.

So what do you think of it? Does it suck or not? Will you add funds to your wallet and buy wherever you want and whenever you want the game you really want but don’t have enough money at the moment?

Jeaaar, lets give Steam our money and MAYBE get something for that, later… they get interest and customer loyalty (u think youre clever when re-charging your wallet to use your remaining deposit? nope, but steam is… cause they made u to give more cash! you dont use it? steam wins, too)

    ps: Steam isn’t a bank… they don’t give us our money back…

So it would seem that this is simply their micro transactions (not so micro seeing the TF2 shop prices) system. I was wondering what would be the real use of that “wallet”.

I guess we can expect some bonus deals with steam wallet vouchers or something like that in the future, but personally I don’t see any other use for it, unless you’re into micro transactions with Valve pricing system.

Holy shit 17.49€ for a hat! That’s crazy.

Steam is now a bank system.
They can use money which they do not posess.

It’s pointless, the only reason it exists is because they haven’t figured out a way how to allow micro-transactions using the standard payment options, so they need a “buffer” in-between and that buffer is the Steam Wallet.

A Steam-currency can’t be far off then, just to make price-comparison a bit more difficult.

By buying stuff you will not only support Valve but community artists as well. Its so simple – people create something, get paid, become happier and create more. Rewards are nice.

“We view the Mann-conomy as the next, crucial step in the evolution of how communities interact with products. Now they’ll not only be able to contribute to the product, they will be directly compensated for their work.”

    Good point rottencat. I agree.

If this is a way to earn items faster than waiting for them to drop, AND support Valve, then I’m OK with it. I might actually buy some just to show my appreciation to the TF2 team which does a marvelous work.

Even though I don’t like the idea of microtransactions either. I simply hope this doesn’t evolve into something really money-centered and unavoidable (if you see what I mean).

Q: Will I have to spend money to remain competitive?
A: No. Any items affecting gameplay, and even most purely cosmetic items, will still be obtainable simply by playing the game

I think that it wont affect gameplay much, but, we’ll see…

Also, Valve invested much money in developing free post-release content for TF2, so, this will be money boost for them, to continue working on future updates…

But, honestly, i don’t like the idea of microtransactions…

I think its definitely helps to keep TF2 going. People who buy stuff actually support a development of this game and kinda service the community. Those who don’t buy, do not lose anything either. If I could choose between killing TF2 like L4D or create continuous content and patches and customization options I would definitely choose the last one.
Take it easy and don’t be so dramatic about it.

    Fishy*

After reading several sites (and the official FAQ), I guess they did everything the clever way.
Perhaps it’s not as bad as it looks. The guys behind TF2 are brilliant people anyway, that’s for sure. So maybe I overreacted a bit. o_O

    Time will tell.

Just read Robin Walker’s interview ( http://www.pcgamer.com/2010/09/30/interview-valve-on-why-theyre-selling-team-fortress-2-items-for-real-money/ ) who says items which have influence over gameplay should be findable…

Still, there is something very fishing about it! :-(

I hope they know what they are doing to TF2…

The thing is, “We don’t force you to buy those items” makes me very angry.

People who choose to waste money in this system a) get better weapons thanks to their mommy’s money b) give credit to Steam and show support for such pesky money sucker c) might actually ruin gameplay balance for using sold only weapons.

Just my thought. I hope I’m wrong. (I know I’m not)
