We are under attack! (updated: NOT!)

Good news everyone! All is good. Nobody went to war against us. We are NOT under attack. It has been simple row of unfortunate accidents….

Steam community problem started with Steam bug, which corrupted event and spammed users every time the logged in. We lost 100 users or so. Screenshots were made (as seen below in this post) and ticket to Steam was made. Steam realized 2 days later that there is glitch with event and changed status from public to private, so people can’t join and receive event-spam. Quoting:

The group was locked momentarily in order to address the issue with the events. It appears that a glitch caused the status to change in the first place. We apologize for the inconvenience.

But they didn’t know or cared to look that this event was already deleted, at the very same day. So they wanted to protect users from this glitch that wasn’t there anymore. But this isn’t the end of the bad luck – stranded, the community group owner, left accidentally the community and therefore lost his group owner status (as I assume). Let’s see what Steam support answers. I have one thread running in Steam support according this and it is totally positive experience.

Original post as follows:

Shortly as Dragoon said: In the last 30 days we had phishing attack, event spam and now the steam group was taken over by Steam.

Looks like all these problems we encountered here and in Steam community are escalated now to bigger scale.

The text is saying:

Group Locked – October 20th @ 4:47am – Modifications to the group have been disabled by Support

Here is the list of our encountered problems:

* First we had problems in blog, when few posts were marked as “bad content” and was added to some blacklists so Firefox marked them as “Attack site/Web Forgery”. Read all this here.

* Then we got loads of posts of phishing URLs in blog and community.

* Also we had loads of spam comments in blogposts and in community page.

* Very frustrating for steam community users were one humor event of end of the world event (22. Dec 2012). And it started to spam users time they log on. It was steam event bug and it didn’t go away even, when to put November in this year. But it could just be Steam bug. As I got answer from Walter 4 days later, on 20th December, where he suspected that event “may have become corrupted”. Deletion really worked, but we lost hundreds of users who were pissed off at it.

* And now this. At the same day, when Walter replied to me, our steam community group got changed to invite-only, so no users can join without invitation.

But maybe they were offended somehow with my post To Steam Community comments:

Hi. I want to say something to you. Personally to everyone.

Thank you, my friends, comrades and fellow brothers in arms. For staying with us on those hard times when life (or.. somebody/thing) tries to screw us.

You are everything we are and united we stand against those big greedy money-robbing sharks. Our voice shall be heard sooner or later and we shall not be discriminated anymore!
But until then let’s boycott all insanely high prices and unfair prices. This is how we can make differences. And let’s not keep that information to yourself. We don’t want our friends, colleague, spouses, relatives etc being robbed. The more we protect our beloved ones, the more difference we can make.

Thank you for being with us. We love you!

I will end this post with a video “Budapest is the capital of what European country?”:

    @ Pyro.

I guess you are right, Steam is a big monster, who doesn’t give a fuck about us and therefore they don’t even bother to sabotage us.

Although the posts that were reported as an attack sites could be done by some fanboy.

Well, at least the group, by attracting attacks, helps the Steam coders in improving the security of the Steam Community… :)

I think it has to do either with a Steam fanboy, or an anti-european militant (really doing it against europeans, or a bored american), or an online store that lost sales after SteamUnpowered found out they were not reliable.

The worst thing that could happen to SteamUnpowered’s claims would be sinking into oblivion (inevitable but yea), Steam would be the last one to poke a stick at us like that, you can put back the conspiracy theories on the shelf :D

I’m a member of the group and I didn’t receive any event spam. I received the glitched event, but I just pressed View Event and it never bothered me again.

“I dont think valve would be stupid enough to kill such a popular group. they didnt kill the l4d2 boycott group…
i think the spam and that steam group thing are connected. maybe someone found out your password…”

They didn’t? It created quite the controversy when they bribed the leaders of the group. A bit later the group was made invite only and there were numerous news posts which constantly tried to disregard of the members’ opinion. Valve is quite manipulative…

wtf is this? Have you tried contacting support why they did it?

if Valve did this to us then it means we are actually hurting their sales numbers. which means we’ve already been heard. if someone else did it., well, I don’t understand why would they do it. unless it’s some ugly and lonely midget living in a dark cave. maybe he’s getting bored.

but hey don’t worry about it. we will always have some means of communication. we have this website and just as enzo said u can recreate a new group any time u want. we’ll be on stand-by. :)

Well.. f.ck Valve and Steam. Fix prices or shut up.
Btw just make a new group and that’s all. Guess every active user will join ASAP as soon as you post the new name.
