Steam: Restrictions in Japan…soon rest of the world?

Some unfortunate users of Steam living in Japan have been the first to be introduced to a very nasty new feature of Steam. Basically, games that are not released in your region apparently will no longer EVER be playable over Steam in affected regions.

Thus if for example, you purchase DA:O from the US then move to Japan, you will no longer be able to play your purchased game. If you ask someone to gift the game to you from the US, you will not be able to play your gift. Details can be found here:

So be aware, Valve now enforce access to your games based on your current IP and no longer apply restrictions for Steam store bought games at the point of purchase only. Expect this feature to be expanded upon in the near future to affect more regions and more games.

News thanks to DAO_Japan. You can discuss this issue here.

this is not true! I live in Japan and I play games that are not available here. For example COD: Black Ops is not available in Japan store so I bought the US retail version and I can play totally fine. And then Battlefield Bad Company 2 is also not available here on steam but my friend gifted it to me and I can play totally fine. I own a lot of games that are not available in my region but can play with no problems

hi, 1st of all, u do know that this might have something to do with u receiving gifts from other regions where the game is cheaper, right? :p

2nd of all, switch to retail, otherwise u will all get f**ked. i already started by getting cod mw2 and da origins from amazon.

p.s. remember what andy pitchford said about allowing steam to become too powerful don’t u? he knows stuff..

God damnit I’m so mad right now. I’m supposed to live in Asia soon so I’m really worried now.

Who the hell has the right to censor like that? This is outrageous!

    Mother $#%#&@! :/

If anyone got a region-locked game, I suggest you backup your Steam files and move your Steam to another PC and take it offline there – that way you’ll at least be guaranteed access to the game you bought/were *cough* gifted.
