Steam Alternatives: DLGamer

One more European gaming store is rising up – it’s called DLGamer. They have a pretty good offer – is it good enough to compete with Steam? It’s up for you to decide. Here’s a little bit more about it:

Founded in 2004 by Stéphane Martinez, DL Gamer is a site for legal download of PC games. Available in nine languages, DL Gamer not only offers complete games, but also beta-testing versions. You can see a video of the game you want before you download it. Finally, DL Gamer offers different kinds of software to download. In three years, the site has established itself among gamers as a major player in the PC games distribution. DLgamer is using Publishers DRM, nothing is added by their services, also sometimes they’re are using a regional restriction on some titles when publishers needs it.

The store is pretty good I suppose, we’re adding the store to the Steam Alternatives. If you know any other good gaming stores please leave a comment!

I would not buy from DL gamer just because his owner ” Stéphane Martinez” does not respect either his partners, nor the gamer community.

He just see them as cash cows, and since cash is the only thing he understands, i would not recommend it to anyone.

We agree on that, some retail prices are too high.

But you can also understand that piracy is not an excuse. Nobodies is pushing you to play a game that you consider too expensive.

You have the right to not buy, then advice the publisher
To buy a game from a cheaper competitor.

But the editor whos made the game is free on the pricing :)

Anyway we just wanted to express ourselves on the fact there is some alternatives to legally download in Europe.
We hope that in future you would take in mind, our obligations to better compare the services, prices between legals download platforms and the rest.

Remember that, in case of problem with an official and legal partner, there is more chances for you to solve an issue on your downloads problems, activation key or be refunded in case of a technical problems

If needed we will be happy to comments your posts if they are as constructive than those we answered

And continue to scream if prices are too expensive this could motivate us to launch promotions:)

    This is correct.

High price supports piracy. And we are against it :)

It is big difference, if you sell one item per day for high price or many items per day for normal price. Now tell me, when you make bigger profit? :)

Sample: EA has £5.00 classic game offers. I bought almost all of them, even if some wasn’t not so my type. http://eastore.ea.com/store/eaemea/cat/offers/categoryID.14365500

So publishers have chosen bad strategy and push people to download stuff illegally :(

DLgamer it’s good to know this from different perspective.

But lets just face it people will not pay 50€ for a game (mostly Eastern European people), they will download it from BitTorrent if it’s that expensive. And that’s a fact.

I am not encouraging piracy in any way but when games cost like this and in addition are bad with millions of bugs it makes you wonder where did the good games go? It wasn’t like this few years ago. Not mentioning 6 hour of game play…for most 50€ titles.

CD-WOW from Stomp HK Ltd is a very good example for the asia, who sells on the european market. From HK asia. They are not using VAT or any taxes.

Looking at the price for Asia, it’s a bit expensive :)

The point of all of this is we were trying to explain, things are not so simple.

You have a plenty of web sites like CD-WoW. We insist on the next article.

All postage, customs and excise duty, VAT and any other taxes associated with the sale (if applicable) will be paid by the buyer and it is the seller’s responsibility to determine, collect and remit the applicable VAT, customs and excise duties and any other taxes associated with the sale.

“Why not you too? Go on and make an example to others that been fair doesn’t mean a bad business model.”

I don’t think Making the same as people whos doesn’t pay theirs taxes and VAT to countries is a winning business model.

    Hello,

I Introduce myself, i’m working for DLgamer as Games partnerships Managers. We just wanted to be involved and try to give you a different view of this situation and try to correct some informations

This is not so simple. We are an European company and we need to meet some legal constraints.

    There is an extract :

    – We don’t have rights all over the world, that explains the IP blocking on certains products.

We have the legal obligation to invoice in euros for consumer living in the Euro area.
    – Apply VAT on average 20% on the consumer of the Euro zone.

We are free to apply against the retail price that we desire.

We can take Risen as example :
    Official price : 49.99€
    DLgamer price : 44.99€

Yes, there is a huge difference between prices in pounds and euro but the only reason is rate on money.
Sterling cost less as 40% than the euro since almost 18 months, excluding VAT rate lower in England.

In dollars the situation would be the same and of course adding VAT.
Because in U.S we are always excluding tax, the VAT is different by State.

    http://www.town-usa.com/statetax/statetaxlist.html

You also forgot that the English paid 40% more if they are buying out from their own euros country :)

If we follow your reasoning you should compare and buy games from Asia such as Thailand, then the average wage is about some decade euros, the price of a game is less than 10€ :).

If you decide to go live in U.S, England or thailand getting a job you will find your games as much expensive even in pounds or dollars:).

This does not prevent you search and find the best price.

Waiting for the flame time :) and answer to your questions.

If publishers set final prices on all digital distributions, there can’t be competition – never ever. Is it even legal?[/i]

    – Thats how they counter fight piracy xD

At least for we know for dealing Cars and computer chips it is illegal.

It is illegal for car manufacturers to discourage their dealers from selling to customers resident in other EU Member States. Competition law enforcement ensures that these illegal practises are punished.

Antitrust: Commission imposes fine of €1.06 bn on Intel for abuse of dominant position; orders Intel to cease illegal practices

They have regional pricing and region locked games like Steam and EA Online Shop.
Games are significant cheaper in US-Dollar$ and British Pound£ than in Euro
I picked a few examples. The prices in brackets are the converted Euro prices based on PayPal’s today’s exchange rates for Euro to £Pound to $Dollar.

    A few examples:
    Risen 34.99 £ (39.76€) 12% cheaper to Euro€
    49.99 $ (34.47€) 23% cheaper to Euro€
    44.99 €

    Tropico 3 26.99 £ (30.67€) 15% cheaper to Euro€
    35.99 $ (24.82€) 31% cheaper to Euro€
    35.99 €

    Battlefield 2 Complete 14.99 £ (17.03€) 15% cheaper to Euro€
    Not listed in $
    19.99 €

    Cities XL « Limited Edition » 34.99 £ (39.76€) 20% cheaper to Euro€
    47.99 $ (33.09€) 33% cheaper to Euro€
    49.99 €

I would suggest add them to the disapprove list as they are equal to EA Store and Steam in their pricing policy and IP based racism.
