So they launched Portal 2 in time, without Valve time…

Anyway, play some and then vote how do you like it.

“Too many loading screens. Thanks Valve for multi-platforming !”

Frequent loading screens are needed when there isn’t enough RAM to load the entire level during one big loading screen.

Any recent computer has 2 GB of RAM (+ the RAM on the graphic card), while the ps3/xbox360 have both only 512k for the GPU and CPU (Xbox 360 almost settled with 256k, but Epic convinced Microsoft to take it to 512k with a demo of an early build of Gears of War, showing the effect the additional 256k would have on the visual experience).

Multi-platform = design your game to fit all platform correctly = frequent loading for the ps3/360, not that much optimization for the PS3 (despite the 6 SPU available to the developers), and all the game design dumbing-down to fit for keyboard+mouse, 360 and ps3 controllers at the same time.

On Portal 2, because it’s a puzzle game and because it’s Valve, the final result not ugly at all, but the consequences are still there.

PS : The “don’t turn off your console” is ONLY a text mistake and not a proof of a “Console first, then PC port” at all
=> Valve forgot to remove the warning text because they added all the consoles’ necessary stuff (that warning is mandatory for the Sony/Microsoft certification) AT THE LAST MOMENT of the development, that’s why they forgot to remove it from the PC version (because it was already close to finished).

It’s not a PC port, but the multiplatforming is visible : low FOV, loading screens, puzzles design (to a certain extent), portals location can be seen through walls, turrets AI (that’s highly POV but yea you got the point).
