Official Steam forums hacked?

The Steam forums are currently offline.

"The Steam Forums are temporarily offline for maintenance. Your patience is appreciated."

Valve is yet to comment on the situation, but some users have reported what looks like a breach that occurred last night.

Images, below, show the forum redesigned slightly to contain a message from FknOwned.com, a website that offers video game hacks.

And emails from Steampowered.com were sent to some users containing the following:

"Ever wanted to dominate the servers you play on with guaranteed results, but you were too afraid to cheat because of ban risks? Visit [fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”yes” overflow=”visible”][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][removed domain] It’s safe, secure and undetected.

"Along with hacks, we’ve also got some general discussion sections, hacking tutorials and tools, porn, free giveaways and much more. This site has been conditioned to meet all your needs in terms of resources so be sure to take a look and tell us what you think.

"Thanks again, the fkn0wned team."

At this stage there is no evidence to suggest that users’ details have been compromised, or that Steam accounts have been breached.

The problem may only relate to the vBulletin forum software Valve uses for Steampowered. However, there may be an issue if gamers use the same username and password combination for the Steam forum as they do for Steam itself.

Wow, still offline. Any news expect the obvious? There is not even a single official word on http://store.steampowered.com/news :(

Had I browsed the Steam forums during this little episode, the only reaction I would’ve had is “LOL”. :D
Cuz’ when you open a gaming forum and see “get free porn”, there’s nothing else you can do. haha

Just don’t understand why their forum hasn’t been attacked yet.

    @Stranded
I know what it is, thank you. You don’t get the point, do you? You just jump to conclusions: why would you change your Steam password when it was the same as on the forums, when nothing points at the leak of usercredentials?

  6. Faark Avatar

Shit happens. Guess they just got the account of a valve employee since they use that old account.

    No mail here btw :(

Unless you have steam guard enabled, its not like gabe newells password is a mystery since steam guard and yet his account was not hacked (to my knowledge)

Copy paste mate. Haha, also @Remco32 it means that if your Steam forum username and password are the same as your Steam account CHANGE IT NOW.

“Visit [removed domain] It’s safe, secure and undetected.”

How nice of you to remove the link to not further advertise them… oh wait. The URL is still visible on the screenshots and you even wrote it once yourself (conveniently even in bold letters).

My bet is that jmccassey’s useraccount got hacked, which had access to admintools of the forum.

    Also:
“However, there may be an issue if gamers use the same username and password combination for the Steam forum as they do for Steam itself.” [citation needed]

If they used proxies? VPN? Tor? I can’t even list the possibilities …

Sure, if they are dumb, they will be caught easily.
If not, Gabe will be in a grumpy mood.

And unfortunately hackers have proxies, VPNs and many more things to keep them safe.

stranded, I meant, Valve have logs. Logs have IP adresses. Also, they have Stea logs, so it won’t be hard to track hackers’ Steam accounts.

  14. stranded Avatar

Steam IDs have nothing to do with Steam forums.

    How stupid these hackers are…
Valve already have their SteamIDs, which means, they know their IP adresses, and where they do live.

    Facepalm….
