And at this point… why shouldn’t people like me cancel their pre-orders? I can assure you I’m not going to cancel my pre-order just because I respect these developers and loved the original game but seriously things like this shouldn’t happen when it comes to digital sale. We want the game now, we paid for it and can’t play it or even pre-load it.
And publishers are amazed that people pirate the games? Think again idiots.

@jobbigt:
No, it is not. Not in the traditional sense of peer to peer, that is.
@MyWay:
First of all, I did not mean, the quality of his writing, so him not being a journalist doesn’t matter. It was purely about content.
Secondly, he mentions things in a context that is entirely false.
– People do NOT pirate because a pirated copy is available earlier
– He CLEARLY was mad at STEAM because pirates can play a RETAIL copy earlier.
– He was mad at STEAM for an early RETAIL leak.
Thirdly, “I have no life or friends”? I’m the one being mature enough here to not throw around insults and question only the CONTENT of the article, not the person who wrote it (or any of the commenters who defend the article)
Isn’t Steam using the BitTorrent protocol for downloading?
starcraft 2 was in bittorrents on same day when it launched, not before launch date :)
I am sure that millions of people wanted it sooner but looks like Blizzard is hard as a rock :)
Seriously, if you want to support devellopers, BUY THIS GAME!
If you don’t support devs, you don’t mind videogame industry is becoming casual just to make some fucking money easily by making farmville-like games , FUCK YOU CASUALS!
GTA IV cost 100 millions $ to devellop and was sold 10 million times.
Facebook games cost few hundreds of dollars to devellop and millions of people play it and pay for shitty items.
So don’t be a dick and buy the good games, or it will be the end of hardcore good gaming like we know it. :(
(sry for my bad english, hope you understood me ^^)
@stranded well, I agree with u. 100%. I was in the same situation with Borderlands. some of my friends were playing the pirated version a week before me. but unlike u I will not buy high profile games from Steam anymore. I will get them from amazon or pirate them. after all, they r asking for it. :)
and for everyone again…..stranded is not sayin that u can play the leak. he sayed that u cant pre-download mafia 2 on steam but u can download it on the internet …that u can play is not neccessary in this case but idiot like this guys here in the comments dont check it. but first its important everyone can create some beef with no reason….or yeah there is a reason the fuckin life of some commentposters here
he what going on here with the comments?
first enticore…..idiot if u have problems with the quality of this post then dont read it and dont visit steamunpowered.eu because stranded is not a journalist so its ok if the quality of the post is not the best but i understand the meaning of his post.
so please delete your account here because i hate bitches like u which go on every side to say how boring his life is and he have no friends or relationship so he flame on the internet.
then for 123….
u dont check that worms is nothing then worth the 18bucks? u are a faggot which is subjectively but is angry about the subjectively of stranded. u dont check that ure meaning about your games is not neccessary here because u say mafia 2 is not worth but worms it is? senseless bitch stop talkin….
then pyro … u study buisness or why u post here your entire life?
for everyone here again.
steamunpowered.eu is an fansite of stranded. its not payed from everyone or anythin else….if u dont like the posts please leave the side and put your finger in your ass. because its privat work of stranded and now to say he do something wrong here is the wrong way….he have to earn honor because of fightin against steam. build a base where everyone can talk with other peoples about steam. buy some games about some members of steamunpowered or only to build a fun clan to beat some fags like u in tf2.
on this side it was never sayed that stranded is a journalist or anything else so i dont know why u assholes think u need some articles like time magazine.
i know everyone can say what he want we are a free world. but yeah i hate peoples like u which dont know how to guess the work of an other human. and i think u dont create an side and post there every day comments so no one can say everyone against u but yeah creatin beef in this case u are a profi or what?
i hope stranded delete the guys here….no one of them help steamunpowered.eu with such fuckin comments
I think Stranded got angry about something and sadly didn’t precisely (enough) explained what the problem was, it can’t be that simple, I highly doubt he’s mad at Steam only because the torrent is available before the official release.
Everyone knows Mafia II went “Gold” (finished 1.0 version) few weeks ago, for several good reasons :
– let the publisher print the DVDs, ship them to the retail store, prepare the release with all the marketing stuff (including review copies to “game journalists”)
– let the devs, after spending the last-month(s) crunching (it’s pretty rare to finish everything on time) (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_developer#Crunch_time), take a few days off to avoid going mad, then set up a hotfix team in case of major undetected bugs/performance issues
Of course in a “perfect digital distribution world”, only a hacker connecting to the servers could get the game before the initial release, however we’re in 2010 : both retail AND digit exist at the SAME time, so DVDs are being shipped to retail store few days before the release, and some underpaid store clerk easily rip some copies (or sell them to hacking teams) and put them on torrent.
—-
But you’ll ask, why – for Gamers’ sake – they don’t release Mafia II before the retail store ?
(thus preventing early leaks)
– First, digital distribution is NEW, while retail distribution is old and fully controlled (ex: special deals with stores).
– Second, Steam get a cut on each sale. That mean LESS money per copy for the publisher (if “Steam-cut > retail deployment cost” of course).
=> digit distribution won’t be treated better than retail, it’s more the contrary.
– Third, around 80% of sales happen in the first 6 months. The marketing campaign must strike like a lightning bolt : fast, strong, highly visible. If they separate release between retail and digit distribution, they will get LESS sales (= LESS money).
(!) It was proven hundreds of time, if you spread the releases between countries (US, EU, Asia) and/or platforms (consoles, PC), you get LESS sales, because the marketing impact was weaker.
The thing is, the “torrent release” date is not really under control, they can weaken its effect by encrypting data, however people will need an internet access to get the key to install the game… that’s a DRM scheme, aka crap-stuff-preventing-you-from-playing, something no one want (except DRM companies)

Back on topic (= Stranded OP), I agree that the quality of this post is problematic.
I think there’s the same problem we had when the website started : some post are too personal, rushed out in the middle of a rage moment, sometime lacking some of the informations needed to calmy judge the responsible people.
I think Stranded should either go easy on that kind of post, or simply had a funny banner “Personal Rant” or “Strander Rant”, “Soapbox”, “Rage-o-licious” or similar stuff, maybe adding a dedicated blog attached to the website, where Stranded could say everything he wants freely :D
Yeah the CloneCD is worthless. The files are encrypted and won’t decrypt until release day by Steam. There will be no crack until the game became officially available. I think it’s not even possible to install it right now as this would require Steam and Steam won’t decrypt the files yet and even when…. there is no EXE file. The executable has to be downloaded from Steam.
@ratm: that’s another thing I wanted to address, but forgot (and being unable to edit own comments….)
“seriously things like this shouldn’t happen when it comes to digital sale”
This is from a retail disc, so I don’t know what the whole digital sale has to do with this.
So what if it’s on bittorrent? Games are ALWAYS released earlier underground. Also, it’s not legal to break the street date.
seriously, fuck you!
you are on a fancy private tracker, big deal… so am i.
i buy things that are worth it, like call of duty 2, 4, tf2, day of defeat source, worms…
don’t whine about leaks…
Hahaha, oh wow, this news post is totally off.
Damnit, I hate how I can’t edit my own comments (wanted to add more).
“And publishers are amazed that people pirate the games? Think again idiots.”
So you think people pirate because the torrent is available sooner? I would think twice before throwing the word “idiot” around then.
I’m sorry, but the quality of newsposts really has been declining on this website.
First of all, this release is a CLONEDVD, so it’s useless, people who download it will not be able to play it as there is no crack.
Secondly, “We want the game now, we paid for it and can’t play it or even pre-load it.”
You knew the release date in advance, since it was on steam’s page, so what the f*ck are you blaming steam for?
(not to mention that the release date is set by the publisher, not the shop that’s selling a product!)
