4.5 million pirated copies of Witcher 2 out there, according to CD Projekt

Polish developer CD Projekt claims that its Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings has been pirated more times since release than you might have expected. In a recent interview with PC Gamer, CEO Marcin Iwinski does some quick back-of-the-hand calculations according to what he saw on illegal downloading sites, and comes up with 4.5 million copies of the game obtained illegally. He also says, however, that "as of today we have sold over one million legal copies, so having only 4.5-5 illegal copies for each legal one would be not a bad ratio."

He then suggests "the reality is probably way worse." Still, CD Projekt isn’t interested in digital rights management, and Iwinski says that it would cause more trouble for legally paying gamers than it would stop any piracy. The solution, he says, is to both add value to buying games legally, and educate users about why it’s the right thing to do.

"We started offering high value with the product — like enhancing the game with additional collectors’ items like soundtracks, making-of DVDs, books, walkthroughs, etc.," he says. "This, together with a long process of educating local gamers about why it makes sense to actually buy games legally, worked. And today, we have a reasonably healthy games market." Iwinski’s got a point — it’s often an easier battle just selling more legal copies of a game (by providing a better value to customers) than preventing would-be pirates from beating even oppressive DRM.

@hunshiki Well…. I have premium accounts on rapidshare, megaupload, fileserve, filesonic, etc so I do not really use torrents (they are just slow compared to my premium and they also suck my upload bandwidth) and as far as I know there are imba softwares like greedytorrent that cheat the “ratio”.
And If some1 wanted to fix their ratio honestly, what about downloading and then seeding something that you wanted for yourself : for example… you like a movie… you download it then you seed it for XX minutes/hour/day… you don’t have to use your precious download megabites to download random things and then seed… that is just DUMB because you still lower your ratio when you download the file and you get nothing because you didn’t want that file. Also you are talking about games, not movies. Videogames are usually big and it is hard to upload more than 1/10 GB of random things to “boost” your ratio.

    Cheers!

P.S. And I spend less than 4€/month for all my 83 premium hosters. :)

@f3d3r1c0mb4t: You ever been to a torrent site? Oh wait, I know, I know, you would _never_ download anything.
    Right.

So there is a thing called ratio. And hit n run. And stuff like that.
And people tend to ‘race’ even about uploading a game.

And yes, on a site, there are like ~70k (yes, 70.000 people) who just download it to fix his/her ratio. Or help others download. NOT TO PLAY. NOT TO EXTRACT. NOTHING LIKE THAT.

    That much about pirating.

its like smoking weed, if you really want to do it, youll do it no matter the consequences

hunshiki has a point, those numbers are JUST numbers
Errepunto: if you keep downloading only shit, it doesnt meant thats all what is out there…

if anything, piracy is an advertisement for the developers, who will get the same money no matter what, publishers are the vampire cunts.. they are the ones that start to cry when they cant afford 2 jets and a private tropical island.

I look at pirating this way:

I had a HDD with 500 GB downloaded games. In average, that’s about 50 Games. It was the freedom of getting games for free that got me hooked up in PC-gaming in general. I didn’t buy a single game until a few years of gaming on Pirated games. What do you think made me buy that first copy? Well I was a geek now, because of the wonders of getting free games. When I later discovered Steam, I had maybe downloaded about 70 different games total. Today I have a Steam account of about 430 Games, a small collection of retail games of about 20 . I don’t really think my 70 pirated games can compared with the amount of purchased games I now got. Besides, the Pirating Made me start buying games.

In the end, pirating is really not bad as you think, because it will make people get more involved in the stuff they like. It’s like demos, you get one part of the game for free. If you want multiplayer, updates, good consciousness, community etc. BUY THE GAME.

I would like to say I’m totally against pirating, but I would be lying. Yes, overall pirating is bad for gaming. That I agree with. But sometimes you have that 1 publisher who does everything possible to make the legal buyers regret their purchase, and then I say “fuck it, let ’em have it”. Or they put spyware on your PC just because you don’t have a choice (*cough*ea*cough*). I would like to see hard numbers on how many copies of Battlefield 3 were pirated compared to…I don’t know…World of Goo? My bet is people will more likely pirate BF3 because of the lame Origin than WoG, which is a beautifully made game without DRM, and whose devs deserve every penny.
If some of them would just drop their ridiculous policies altogether (unfair pricing, no support, ineffective DRM, to name but a few) I am 100% positive many of the gamers would stop “fighting back” with piracy and just give them their dues because, after all, they ARE making games and games are fun.

Piracy is more a problem for who download it than for the company. “Unofficial” downloads usually carry “surprises” like tons of malware, no updates, problems with online games,…

    Pirating at your own risk

So hunshiki is saying that in this crazy world there are guys that are really bored so they try to have fun by downloading xx GB of games just for putting them in the recycle bin?
about the demo–> you are right… I also miss the demos :(. They were useful.

Seriously… the heck is wrong with them?
Pirating doesn’t mean stealing something. It means you get a copy of the game.
Okay, a copy. They downlaoded this copy 4.5million times. So what?

Does that mean they played it? No.
Does that mean they at least extracted the .rars? NO.

This whole ‘statistics’ are just plain stupid.
Also … back in the old days, we had a demo. A demo where you could try the game, and the demo was AWESOME. So you bought the game. Now? The complete game comes out. There is no demo. Nothing you could try. Few weeks… months… demo gets delayed. Maybe HALF A YEAR later, you can TRY the game. Ridiculous, isn’t it?

    I agree with him
Used to download pirated games~~ but not anymore
I have all my games on Steam~~ (either activated or purchased on Steam)

nowadays, pirated games… are usually hard to get updates…
slow download (compare to Steam), no DLCs, no achievements, no up-to-date updates, and multiplayer.

So yeah… I am paying for the service.
