Here’s an official letter from Gabe Newell! Please read it.
Hello,
Recently, your Steam account was erroneously banned from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
This was our mistake, and I apologize for any frustration or angst it may have caused you.
The problem was that Steam would fail a signature check between the disk version of a DLL and a latent memory version. This was caused by a combination of conditions occurring while Steam was updating the disk image of a game. This wasn’t a game-specific mistake. Steam allows us to manage and reverse these erroneous bans (about 12,000 erroneous bans over two weeks).
We have reversed the ban, restoring your access to the game. In addition, we have given you a free copy of Left 4 Dead 2 to give as a gift on Steam, plus a free copy for yourself if you didn’t already own the game.
To share your extra copy of Left 4 Dead 2 with a friend, you can ‘Manage Gifts and Guest Passes’ from the ‘Games’ Menu in Steam, or visit this article on the Steam Support site for detailed instructions: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=4502-TPJL-2656.
To access your own copy of Left 4 Dead 2, visit your library of games in Steam. If you didn’t already own the game, it will now be listed among your others there, and is available for download immediately.
Regards,
Gabe Newell

Alien Swarm is a game created by Valve – mostly by people who were hired from the mod community.
The game will be absolutely free! You will have to kill thousands of alien scum with your friends in order to complete the game – the game has 4 player co-op. You will be able to unlock a lot of new weapons and loadout configurations.
Along with the game get the complete code base for Alien Swarm that features updates to the Source engine as well as the SDK.
Alien Swarm adds 3rd person camera, depth of field, improved dynamic shadows and a wide variety of gameplay additions to the Source engine.
Make sure you get it as soon as it comes out tomorrow :-)
I think most of Team Fortress 2 players heard about www.tf2items.com, a website in which you can look at anyone’s backpack from the game with items, guns and hats. The creator of the whole system – Drunken F00l – got VAC banned lately after he leaked a way to get…the golden Wrench. That guy claims he found out from someone at Valve (?) how to get the Golden Wrench (the very rare Engineer class item).
Drunken F00l claims that the whole “random drop” system for the Golden item is bullshit and it was designed in a specific way. You just had to know the time in which it will drop and probably know the special blueprints on item crafting.
Anyway you can read the whole conversation between Drunken and some other people here (we hosted this conversation in case it disappears):

You can read more about this whole situation on official Steam forums.
Now lets get to the point, this is a proof that Valve Anti-Cheat system is not (fully) automated at all. As far as we know the user didn’t use any hack in-game to get the Golden Wrench, he used some sort of script to craft an item at specific time to get the special item. Additionally VAC Banned users don’t get their items removed – and he no longer has the Golden Wrench.
You can view the user’s profile by going here http://steamcommunity.com/id/df – leave a comment if you want.
We will keep you informed about the situation.

A Facepunch Studios forums user claims that he was banned by a Valve Employee for using a SourceMod plugin to activate some console cvars in the game itself (if you don’t know what SourceMod is it’s basically a plugin that’s being used on 99% of Source Engine games, you can do a lot of kinky stuff if you have admin rights and proper plugins…).
Anyway here’s this guy’s post:
I was using the speedhacking exploit with sourcemod on a random TF2 server. This guy http://steamcommunity.com/id/professorfarnsworth/ was there, and someone said “Al, don’t you work for valve? can’t you ban this guy?” and he said “yeah, hold on” and I figured they were just trying to scare me into leaving, and he went in spectate. Then about 5 mins later he came back and said “There, I got him banned, just wait a few mins” and I said “Vac bans take weeks.” and someone else said “I thought they take months?” and then I suddenly was kicked from the server with the VAC popup thing saying that this is a secure server and i’ve been previously banned for acheating infraction.
He was in this server: TheMaCHinE.org – Advanced Teamplay [HLStatsX]
Does anyone know if they’re allowed to do this? Will a VAC ban like this not get changed just like other VAC bans?
Before you say that I should have gotten banned, this goes against what VAC is designed to do. VAC checks for a program altering the EXE or core DLL files of the game, and then has a delayed ban. There are not supposed to be manual vac bans, I used to believe.
I used a plugin – sourcemod, to make the client think that it is the server and allow certain cvars to be changed, which allowed me to use speedhacks USING CONSOLE COMMANDS and not a third-party program or DLL. This VAC ban was unfair and should not have happened.
Original thread on Facepunch Studios in here.
IW.net and VAC are so good!!!11
Cheat / Hack Free Games: The biggest benefit of using IWnet by far is the fact that you don’t have to worry about joining a server full of aim-bots, wallhacks, or cheaters. Or relying on the server admin of the server to constantly be monitoring, banning, and policing it. Modern Warfare 2 on PC allows us to control the quality of the game much more than ever before as well as utilizing the VAC (Valve-Anti-Cheat) system to keep games clean of hackers and cheaters.

Update:
It couldn’t be a free weekend account because in that period of time there was no free weekends with VAC enabled games.
It might be a guest pass though. So my bad if it is ;P

This is a pretty delicate subject. No one really knows how Valve Anti-Cheat system works. Can you get banned for nothing? Most of you will probably say "No! VAC is great".
Well here you go:
Here’s an empty profile (has no games at all) with VAC status ban(s) on record.
Because nobody likes playing with cheaters.Playing games should be fun. In order to ensure the best possible online multiplayer experience, Valve developed a state-of-the-art anti-cheat system that automatically detects and permanently bans any player using cheats or hacks on a VAC secured server…
Or should it say:
Because you haven’t bought much games lately we decided to ban your account so you could rebuy your games and create a new one!
What do you think about VAC?
I know that right now probably a lot of cheaters will come here and say "I didn’t cheat!!! WTF VALVE GIVE MY MONEYZZZ BACKK !!1!" but the profile above proves that VAC does make mistakes.
Everything does, it’s just a program.
PS
Wanna know how many people got banned on Steam? Here you go.
