CD Projekt Red will give away a "legendary" PC RPG for free on GOG.com this Thursday, 5th April (revealed by Eurogamer).
The giveaway coincides with CD Projekt’s Spring Conference, which is being streamed live at 5pm GMT (presumably 6pm BST).
Note that giveaway has nothing to do with the "extraordinary" conference announcement CD Projekt has been teasing.
CD Projekt Red head of marketing Michał Platkow-Gilewski explained to Eurogamer:
"No, there will be no announcement of a new game.”
"But to give you some hints and not to spoil the surprise, CD Projekt RED and GOG.com have prepared something very special for all the PC fans of The Witcher 2 Assassins of Kings, who already have the game, as well as for all those who will buy one any time in the future.”
"It is something really unique," he added.
"More to come on the conference."
What do you guys think it will be?

The new, new GOG offers more community features to suggest new games, a new, faster downloader, and, most importantly, more games.
GOG is fulfilling its promise of newer games with a growing selection of recent indies including Trine and The Whispered World. It’s even selling a game that’s so not old, it’s not even out yet. Pre-orders for the first-person dungeon RPG Legend of Grimrock are open now for $11.99, in advance of its April 11 release.
I guess they did realize that they won’t be able to sell old titles only if they want to make money ;-)

That’s a cool promo I guess, if you’re into RTS games and don’t mind a little outdated graphics this is going to be perfect for you. All you need to do is login to your GOG account and download the free game (you can create a free GOG account as well). Here’s the game description from GOG:
Control the destiny of a fledgling civilization through as many as 500,000 years of human history. From meagre beginnings you must exploit the natural resources around you to build an empire capable of dominating the Earth. But your rise to supremacy will not go unchallenged. As was the case throughout history, rival civilizations are certain to oppose you every step of the way.
New technologies, buildings and weapons become available as your civilization progresses through history. But bear in mind that advancement does not necessarily mean success. Your civilization might flourish during one Epoch only to be crushed in the next…

Polish developer CD Projekt claims that its Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings has been pirated more times since release than you might have expected. In a recent interview with PC Gamer, CEO Marcin Iwinski does some quick back-of-the-hand calculations according to what he saw on illegal downloading sites, and comes up with 4.5 million copies of the game obtained illegally. He also says, however, that "as of today we have sold over one million legal copies, so having only 4.5-5 illegal copies for each legal one would be not a bad ratio."
He then suggests "the reality is probably way worse." Still, CD Projekt isn’t interested in digital rights management, and Iwinski says that it would cause more trouble for legally paying gamers than it would stop any piracy. The solution, he says, is to both add value to buying games legally, and educate users about why it’s the right thing to do.
"We started offering high value with the product — like enhancing the game with additional collectors’ items like soundtracks, making-of DVDs, books, walkthroughs, etc.," he says. "This, together with a long process of educating local gamers about why it makes sense to actually buy games legally, worked. And today, we have a reasonably healthy games market." Iwinski’s got a point — it’s often an easier battle just selling more legal copies of a game (by providing a better value to customers) than preventing would-be pirates from beating even oppressive DRM.

Over the last few years the Polish project has expanded from classics to a really impressive catalogue of games that made the 90s and early 00s interesting. Clearly they’ve been letting in many more recent games of late, with Fahrenheit appearing last week for example. And they used it to launch their own game, The Witcher 2, earlier this year.
But it seems they want to expand even further, going directly into competition with the likes of Steam, Impulse, GamersGate or Origin. Which is always a bold step, but one made much more interesting when you consider their DRM-free requirement.
Their newly announced two year plan’s biggest headline is the decision to start including games less than three years old. Describing the intentions as “audacious”, managing director Guillaume Rambourg assures that classic games will still be added, but a new higher price-point will be introduced for fresh games. However, he states, they will remain DRM-free, along with the same price offered everywhere in the world.
He aims to have the company be offering over 400 games by the end of next year, which will partly be achieved by a desire to work with indies, both in developing and publishing. He concludes,
“We’ve made GOG.com the destination for classic PC games, but now is the time to take this to the next level and emerge as the best alternative digital distribution platform for all PC games.”
That’s a tough competitive space they’re getting into, especially as it involves losing their most obvious identity – oldness. It seems unlikely they’ll be offering a service such a Steam, rather remaining a store. But then, if they stay resolutely DRM-free, they could certainly represent an alternative. While Origin’s demanding online activations and scanning your hard drive for whatever it feels like, there’s GoG just giving you the game and nothing else. I can see the appeal. I’m just wondering how many publishers will.
