Microsoft is looking for beta testers for a new title created by Robot Entertainment which consists of many Age of Empires series developers. The new game has a codename, it’s either Spartan or Project S. The rumor is kinda obvious – adding the best Age of Empires features to some cool and modern graphic design/engine. I personally can’t wait for more info about this. You can read a lot more about this on Kotaku.

I’ve noticed that you don’t even need to have Counter-Strike Source installed (although I have Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead games and the beta downloads only around 200MB).
I hope they made this game playable with the new engine, just like they did with Day of Deafeat: Source
Some Mac user (he’s in the Steam Mac beta program) already redesigned the interface to fit today’s Mac standards and this is what he said:
However, the part I disliked about Steam on the Mac is the (understandably) less-than-native looking and feeling UI. While the entire application was recently redesigned (and re-engineered to utilize Webkit as its rendering engine), it still feels less than at home between the system apps.
Here are “before and after” screenshots:
You can read more about it here. That’s a pretty nice skin (the fucking stripes are gone and gradients are a lot easier to look at)! I would love to see a Windows port of it. I realize there are plenty of Steam Windows skins out there but they aren’t as good as this.
In other Steam Mac news: Steam for Mac gets a little more support from Tripwire Interactive (Red Orchestra, Killing Floor)

Applicants selected to test will be contacted in the comings weeks.
Just a simple poll, do you like the new user interface beta? Got any suggestions for it? Leave a comment and if we’ll get enough of them maybe we could send over our ideas to Valve Software.
And here’s the poll:
Also check out this thread with a lot of good suggestions (official Steam forums).
And here’s an official support/bug report forum.
Check this out:
- Threaded network communication encryption/decryption work
- Improved caching of images/icons fetched over HTTP and used inside client UI (avatars, achievement images, etc)
- Windows 7 jump list improvements
- Improved Steam Cloud transfer protocol performance/reliability when syncing large files
- Consistency improvements for stats and achievements
Steam Forums post – report bugs here.
There’s a rumor on the net that Valve is giving out keys to some unknown game. We just wanted to clear it all out, you just have to go here and get your free beta key for Zero Gear – a funny racing game (similar to Mario Kart). So don’t listen to some morons on the Internet and don’t think of buying this key either when someone wants to sell them – those keys are totally free and temporary.
After you receive a key enter it in the Steam client and download the free beta while you can! The game takes around 240MB.
Have fun!
And here are some screenshots:
And here’s a short gameplay video I made the other day:
New Steam beta showed up today. The beta introduces several fixes and I guess those are worth checking out:
- Added contact email account verification by request and on new account creation
- Improved account security with verified contact email to prevent phishing
- Added mod support for Killing Floor
- Fixed memory leak
Now you can verify your e-mail address:
And after that you are verified:

Why is this so important? Right now if someone steals your account (or simply logs in from another location) they cannot change your password until they click a verification link on your verified e-mail account.
Pretty nice, right now hijacking is almost impossible. Almost because when some idiots have their Steam password and e-mail password the same (or have a keylogger) their account can still be stolen.
Now Valve needs to think about how to stop getting people VAC banned if the person who logs in from other location (the hijacker) manages to start a Valve (or VAC) game with a cheat.
+1 for Valve.
