Poll Time: Would you want us to expand?

Hello. We’ve been wondering for a while now if you guys expect us to expand in the near future. Please vote in the poll below. There are lots of ideas such as making a video podcast of some sort concerning prices and game availablity around the planet and even crazy ideas like invading some huge gaming events like Gamescom in Germany in search for answers about prices and games in general. I think big publishers and game developers present there would hate us instantly… Thanks for visiting us for such a long time we really appreciate it!

Path of Exile reaches 2 million registered accounts

The game isn’t even out yet and the community looks to be quite big even before the game’s full release. Grinding Gear Games announced today that it’s reached 2 million registered accounts since the open beta began in January.

“We’re really pleased with Path of Exile’s reception,” Grinding Gear Producer Chris Wilson says in a press release. “It blew our expectations out of the water and continues to grow every day. The continued feedback and support from our fans has been great. We expect to add a lot of new content and features during the open beta period as we approach full release later this year.”

Maxis (kinda) admits servers are not needed for individual cities

Bredshaw

So yesterday Maxis general manager Lucy Bredshaw made a blog post. I guess she had to answer to all the new information that popped up lately

So, could we have built a subset offline mode? Yes. But we rejected that idea because it didn’t fit with our vision. We did not focus on the “single city in isolation” that we have delivered in past SimCities. We recognize that there are fans – people who love the original SimCity – who want that. But we’re also hearing from thousands of people who are playing across regions, trading, communicating and loving the Always-Connected functionality. The SimCity we delivered captures the magic of its heritage but catches up with ever-improving technology.

Ok, so they don’t care about their long-time fans… That’s cool though, cause they thought of the people who love always always DRM instead. That’s nice :)
And also, there’s apparently tons of advantages with always-online DRM, compared to offer both a social online experience and a solid single player experience. She names just a few in her blog post:

Valve’s business increased by 50 percent last year

Gabe Newell stepped up to the stage during last week’s BAFTA awards to receive the prestigious Academy Fellowship for his contributions to gaming. Newell credited Valve’s successes largely to user-generated content on open platforms such as Steam Workshop before sharing some jaw-dropping numbers. “There’s sort of an insatiable demand for gaming right now,” Newell said. “I think our business has grown by about 50 percent on the back of opportunities created by having these open platforms.

“And just so people understand how big this sort of scale is getting, we were generating 3.5 terabits per second during the last Dota 2 update,” he added. “That’s about 2 percent of all the mobile and land-based Internet activity.”

SimCity modder removes always online restriction

Here’s a positive story for today. UKAzzer from United Kingdom successfully hacked the game so you don’t really need to be online after all. Check out the story on Gamespot.

simcity

Bullet points with recent modding discoveries:

  • Players have reverse engineered modding. Significant parts of the game’s code is in Javascript.
  • The game can be played without an internet connection indefinitely after modding. Can only stay in one city.
  • SimCity has behavior for offline save handling. When offline, your city is saved and is uploaded to Origin the next time you go online. Offline mode seemed to be cut hastily.
  • Debug tools were left open, allowing ‘griefing’ other people’s cities by setting DEBUG=1.
  • “Big maps” are referenced multiple times in the game’s code. Possible DLC regions with big city plots? It’s the only way they can increase the city size without breaking existing maps.
  • Internal terraforming tools were discovered, but requires a special build of the game.
  • Population numbers are faked / inflated – GetFudgedPopulation. chart – thanks fat_ugly_midget.
  • After modding, you can play around outside 2km2 plot, and it saves syncs to the server.
  • Latest patch has made package files read only, and disabled debug tools / the cheat console. (Confirm please, I do not own / will not support the game)

Maxis insider: SimCity servers not necessary!

    SimCity

As you all know SimCity have suffered massive server issues since launch.
While players have been begging for an offline mode, EA representatives have been abundantly clear that this simply isn’t possible. Maxis’ studio head, Lucy Bradshaw, has told both Polygon and Kotaku that they “offload a significant amount of the calculations to our servers”, and that it would take “a significant amount of engineering work from our team to rewrite the game” for single player.

A SimCity developer has got in touch with RPS to tell them that at least the first of these statements is not true. He claimed that the server is not handling calculations for non-social aspects of running the game, and that engineering a single-player mode would require minimal effort.
