A nasty new Steam feature introduced with Dragon Age: Origins

I thought this deserved being exposed to a wider audience… Some unfortunate users of Steam living in Japan have been the first to be introduced to a very nasty new feature of Steam. Basically, games that are not released in your region apparently will no longer EVER be playable over Steam in affected regions.

Thus if for example, you purchase DA:O from the US then move to Japan, you will no longer be able to play your purchased game. If you ask someone to gift the game to you from the US, you will not be able to play your gift. Details can be found here:

So be aware, Valve now enforce access to your games based on your current IP and no longer apply restrictions for Steam store bought games at the point of purchase only. Expect this feature to be expanded upon in the near future to affect more regions and more games.

Thank you for pointing this out to us.

This is an extremely nasty new anti-feature of STEAM and it's contrary to a globalized economy advised by the companies themselves.

When one thing was great about STEAM and the ability to download and play the games you own anytime, anywhere.

This is an event I call a "wake-up call". It means to me from from now on always prefer physical retail copies over digital copies unless they game forces some kind of online presence.
Like Online activation, or tieing the game with a Steam or EADM account. Then a digital option is OK because I'm at the mercy of them anyway.
Only exception I'm going to make to this rule is when buying games for budged prices. For 15$ I don't care. :)

I buy all my games, well it was like that until recently. I have about 150 digital games and about 50 retail games. I refuse to pay for a game if it has ( Online activation, or tieing the game with a Steam or EADM account) I just get the free version instead. If developers want money for their titles they are going the wrong way about it.

If you have games like this that might be affected sometime in the future, create a backup for yourself on another PC and take that Steam offline – should allow you access to the game(s) at least.

So, for example, if i were to install Dark Messiah (retail because of country purchase ban, still requires steam), I won't be able to play a game I bought? With real money?

What heights will the dictatorship reach next…

Also, hello :P, first post.
