Gabe Newell said that it’s going to be a great addition and was a result of many direct requests from their customers.
“The Steam app comes from many direct requests from our customers,” he said
“Seeing which of your friends are online and playing a game, sending quick messages, looking at screenshots for an upcoming game, or catching a sale – these are all features customers have requested. Mobile is changing way people interact, play games and consume media, and the Steam app is part of our commitment to meet customer demands and expand the service functionality of Steam to make it richer and more accessible for everyone” Newell added.
We’ll be giving away 3 Steam Mobile invites later today!
I got into beta (lucky me!) and here are some screenshots of the application:

One of the guys who got into DOTA 2 beta has decided to share with the rest of the world by leaking the client to the public. Most notable are some strings found in the game’s files that point to a microtransaction driven, free-to-play model similar to what Valve’s own Team Fortress 2 currently employs. This text seems to imply that you’ll be able to spend real-world money to buy bundles, gear, tools, and effects, though any mention of paying to unlock individual heroes is suprisingly absent.
Valve has previously stated that they’re looking to finish the game before they commit to any particular pricing model, but this newly revealed info seems to indicate that they’re at least prototyping a microtransaction-driven system internally.
Other snippets of code have revealed a list of game modes and mentoring features. Included among the game modes are Single Draft, All Random, Random Draft, Captains Draft, Captains Mode, Death Mode, and Easy Mode. The mentoring system, which Valve has touted heavily as one of the most important community features, will allow players to gain karma and levels for writing hero guides or taking players under their wing.
The game’s spell icons have also surfaced, courtesy of Cyborg Matt. A lot of these are probably still placeholders. As if that weren’t enough, someone’s been uploading all of the game’s sound files to YouTube, organized by hero. To finish off this massive leak, forum users at PlayDota.com have gotten their hands on an exhaustive list of hero backstories.
Dota 2 is currently slated for release on the Windows and Mac PCs sometime in 2012, with a public beta expected to start within a matter of weeks.
The guy who leaked the beta is TsunamiNori and he’s probably fucked at the moment. Although he’s probably not from the US so he might not get sued. Here’s his Steam profile.

Steam has trading in beta testing. Everyone can participate.
Possible first tradeable to-be items:![]()
* There are no geo-restrictions.
* No, you cannot trade your own bought games, only received gifts.
* You can drag items to chat window to start trading
* Your trading inventory is under COMMUNITY > Actions > View Inventory
* Currently on sale:
Team Fortress 2 items and Steam Gifts can currently be traded in the Steam Trading Beta.
We’re working now with other game developers to incorporate both Trading and Inventories. Portal 2 should be reasonably soon and we hope to have several third-party games in the next few months.
Any game you’ve purchased from the store as a gift, or received as an Extra Copy, can be traded to other users. They can be used to trade for other Gifts, or for items in Team Fortress 2. We’ve added a new checkout option to the Store when purchasing a gift so you can save it for trading or sending later, to support users who want to save games for trade fodder.
Trading a Steam Gift is very similar to sending a gift to someone; just that once it is traded that user can then either trade it again, or open it for themselves. There are no restrictions on territory.
No, only games that have been bought as a gift, and thus have never been played, can be traded. Once the Steam Gift is opened and added to your game library, you won’t be able to trade it again.
Once you have opted in to the Steam Trading Beta, you can select Community in the Steam client, then on the right is a link to View Inventory.
Your inventory obeys your existing regular privacy settings – public, friends only, friends of friends, or private.

Currently Steam screenshots are in beta-testing (you can also participate). This allows players take screenshots and share them from any game that uses Steam overlay.
If you’d like to test the feature, you can opt-in to the latest Steam client beta by going to Steam > Settings > Account then changing your beta participation to “Beta Update”.

Once you’ve signed up for the beta, press F12 in any game to take a screenshot. Screenshots are automatically uploaded to the Steam Cloud after exiting the game, or can be manually uploaded while playing through the in-game overlay. Screenshots can be managed through the Steam Community web site and can be published to your profile to share with your friends. Games that use DirectX 8 and earlier are not yet supported.
You can adjust the screenshot hotkey by visiting the In-Game section of Steam settings. If you prefer to not have your screenshots automatically upload to the Steam Cloud, you can set this in the Downloads + Cloud section of settings. Currently in the works is an interface that will allow you to manage your local collection of screenshots and choose which ones to delete or upload to the cloud manually.
The feature is still a work-in-progress while in beta and they will be fine-tuning it over the next couple of weeks. Please visit the Steam Screenshots thread in the Steam Forums to point out bugs, suggest improvements or provide general feedback.

Some Mac user (he’s in the Steam Mac beta program) already redesigned the interface to fit today’s Mac standards and this is what he said:
However, the part I disliked about Steam on the Mac is the (understandably) less-than-native looking and feeling UI. While the entire application was recently redesigned (and re-engineered to utilize Webkit as its rendering engine), it still feels less than at home between the system apps.
Here are “before and after” screenshots:
You can read more about it here. That’s a pretty nice skin (the fucking stripes are gone and gradients are a lot easier to look at)! I would love to see a Windows port of it. I realize there are plenty of Steam Windows skins out there but they aren’t as good as this.

After two months in beta and over twenty updates, the Steam Client UI Update is slated to release to all Steam users this coming Monday, April 26th.
The beta has been a huge success. The number of people who participated exceeded Valve’s expectations, and so far people created 25 thousand posts to the beta user forums. As a result of their participation, the Steam team has had the feedback required to make the new Steam client more reliable and useful than ever.
For those of you who’ve yet to join the beta, it’s not too late! By participating now, you’ll be updating your system to include Valve’s most recent developments. You’ll also minimize the amount of content required to download later, once the released version becomes available. And last but not least, you’ll be experiencing the future of Steam now, including dozens of new features, bug fixes and general improvements.
Regardless of whether you’ve chosen to opt into the beta, keep your eye out for the Steam client update on Monday, April 26th, when a brand new Steam is headed your way.
