News
Latest news from the digital distribution world.
It seems several people who have sent out complaints as according to the
1€ ≠ 1$ announcement ( click ) have received a reply from the European Commission.
Here is a picture of the response:
The person responding appears to be not understanding the issue. Or is it that we did not understand the issue at the time? We must be reminded that the original issue was 1 euro being 1 dollar, thus the group name “1€ ≠ 1$“.
Later on it became apparent that Steam UK was way cheaper and that certain European countries did not charge VAT for software, or even use the European currency at all.
But let’s not forget the other letter mentioning. The person mentions several other arguments that do apply to the matters that I just named. If you read the letter well, you can see that the person says different pricing in European countries is not an “exception”, but in in fact “a rule”.
Here is my reply to this letter trying to clarify the matter, and hopefully get some answers which are helpful:
I will keep you guys updated with any news on this matter.
That’s pretty interesting:
Response (Antony)
Hello,You have reached the Technical Support Team for Rockstar Games Tech Support, we are unable to force a company to change their prices of products in the same way we are unable to change the processes of a shop on the high street. we are un aware of the costs and taxes involved in the Steam system and are therefore unable to comment.
If you would like to place this to the company in general we would recommend using the Mouthoff@rockstargames.com e-mail address, although we are unsure what they would be able to do.
Kind Regards
Rockstar Games Tech Support
So that gives us one more e-mail address, hopefully a correct one:
Thanks to
Simplex for fixing the “document”.
Dear company,
Recently Valve (the owner of Steam Store – www.steampowered.com) has “localized” prices for European customers – prices of games in US dollars were converted to Euro at ridiculous $1=1€ exchange rate – this is more than 30% higher than the actual exchange rate (1$=0,75€).
This is how the situation looks now:
- some of those who complained about the price rise got banned from the official Steam Forums
- your company loses sales because of Steam prices being higher than retail
- Valve gets all extra money
- they give your games a bad name
- Valve is ignoring their customers’ cry for decent prices
- they didn’t even made any announcement or given any sign of their awareness of the problem
So could you, as a company, try to contact Valve and discuss the pricing issue? This would benefit a large group of European gamers, not to mention your company.
To know more about this situation please go to www.steamunpowered.eu.

As suggested by
jojo here’s probably a better “document” to send out to the developers/publishers:

You can discuss this on Epic Games forums as well, I have started a topic there, hopefully someone from Epic Games will answer!
Instead of attaching documents to their e-mails paste the content of the documents in the e-mail itself, attachments are probably not very well accepted at those companies!
OK, here we go! Each and everyone of you should download this document I’ve just created (click here) and send it over to all developers who have their games on Steam. It’s 3 different formats: PDF, DOC and ODT. Chose whatever you like.
You can link the PDF file in the messages (http://www.steamunpowered.eu/important.pdf), attach it to support forms (if a company has any) or send the PDF file over e-mails.
All e-mails below are for sales, publishing contact only.

Content of e-mail:
Please read the text in the attachment, it's available in 3 different file formats (PDF, DOC and ODT). Thanks for reading!
Content of e-mail #2:
Copy and paste the text from documents and put it directly into the e-mail box!
They have fixed “the bug” and right now everything is in âŹ, even in the checkout.
Ehhhh.
I’ve received few e-mails from random people that dollar is back, you just need to add something to your cart (still shows euros there!), then fill out all the data and go to the last step.
I did it with COD4 (and I live in Poland), and see this:

I did not use any proxy or anything.
Notice that the price is WITH VAT INCLUDED but it doesn’t show how much $ VAT actually costs you.
What the hell!? Why AFTER the Holiday Sale?
See more screenshots @ comments.
See this receipt email (thanks to DogCake) – purchased in Germany.
2009 is already here in my area, I wish everyone to have a good year and lower prices on Steam Store ;)
Now go and have some fun xD
